Professional Standards Investigations bring challenges and risks to Force reputations not found elsewhere in policing.
The Investigations In Professional Standards Course has been devised and is delivered by the former Heads of PSD of two of the UK’s largest police forces. It is aimed at all Professional Standards staff and managers and covers; operational and strategic decision making, investigating complaints and misconducts as well as working with the IPCC and engaging with staff associations.
The course follows the path of a complaint from instigation to discipline hearing and beyond, along the way equipping students with legal knowledge and the communication and influencing skills to ensure the best possible outcomes are achieved. It also covers the overlap with performance and attendance regulations to assist in dealing with those who ‘cannot do’ as opposed to those who ‘will not do’.

At a time when poorly managed, or investigated, complaints or misconducts make front page news and are particularly damaging to force reputations, and all those involved, this course will give students the knowledge and skills to conduct or manage robust, legal and transparent investigations. This ensures fairness in the process and the best possible chance of complainant satisfaction. An absolute must for every Professional Standards investigator or manager.
Our PSD courses have now been updated to include recent changes to the PSD world arising from the updated Home Office Guidance, the recently launched IPCC Guidance on dealing with discrimination, the Criminal Courts and Justice Act 2015, the Home Office proposals on changes following their review of police conduct processes and the changes associated with holding misconduct hearings held in public.

Appropriate Authority Training Workshop – An exercise based training event focusing on the role and responsibilities of Appropriate Authority within a Professional Standards Department.
Introduction to Professional Standards Department – Aimed at those new to a PSD role to give them an understanding of the range of work carried out by a Professional Standards Department and their statutory responsibilities.
Refresher workshop – Is intended for those who have previously been trained and features an interactive exercise that leads them through all the regulations and guidance documents relevant to their work.
